M5Stack ADS1110 16-Bit ADC I2C Unit V1.1
The M5Stack ADC V1.1 Unit adds high-resolution analog acquisition to embedded systems through an ADS1110 16-bit analog-to-digital converter. The host reads converted data through I2C at address 0x48, while the onboard programmable gain amplifier supports gains of 1, 2, 4, or 8 for signals with different amplitudes.
The unit is useful for sensor outputs, process-control signals, portable instruments, factory automation prototypes, and measurement systems that need more resolution than a typical microcontroller ADC.
Measure Low-Level Analog Signals with Programmable Gain
The PGA can increase sensitivity for smaller input signals, but gain selection also reduces the allowable full-scale input range. Choose gain only after checking the expected signal amplitude and source impedance, and prevent the analog input from exceeding the supported electrical limits.
I2C Integration at Address 0x48
Using I2C lets the host collect high-resolution data without implementing the converter timing directly. Check address conflicts, bus pull-ups, cable length, grounding, and noise coupling before combining the ADC with other peripherals.
Resolution Is Not the Same as Absolute Accuracy
A 16-bit converter provides fine digital resolution, but final measurement accuracy also depends on reference stability, analog front-end design, source impedance, gain setting, calibration, temperature drift, grounding, and electrical noise. Validate the assembled measurement chain against a suitable reference when accuracy matters.
Protect the Analog Input
The existing product specification lists a DC input range up to 12V for the complete unit. Confirm wiring and signal limits before connection, and add appropriate protection when the source can generate transients or fault voltages.
Q: Which ADC is used?
A: ADS1110.
Q: What conversion resolution is provided?
A: 16-bit.
Q: Which PGA gain settings are available?
A: 1, 2, 4, and 8.
Q: What is the I2C address?
A: 0x48.
Q: Does 16-bit resolution guarantee 16-bit absolute accuracy?
A: No. Final accuracy depends on calibration, reference stability, gain, source impedance, analog design, temperature, grounding, and noise.
