The M5Stack CAN Unit provides a galvanically isolated classical CAN physical layer for industrial controllers, robotics, distributed equipment, test systems, and automotive protocol development. Its CA-IS3050G transceiver converts a compatible host CAN controller’s TX/RX signals into differential CANH/CANL communication at up to 1 Mbps. The isolated power stage improves robustness against common field disturbances. The host must still provide the CAN controller, frame handling, bitrate, filtering, error recovery, and higher-level protocol.

The unit supplies the isolated transceiver and bus interface while the host generates and receives classical CAN frames.

Operate at Data Rates up to 1Mbps

The practical cable length decreases as bitrate increases, so the final network must be designed for the selected speed.

Separate Controller and Field-Side Grounds

Galvanic isolation helps tolerate ground differences and noise when combined with correct topology and protection.

How to Integrate the CAN Unit

  1. Confirm that the host includes a compatible CAN controller.
  2. With power removed, connect CANH, CANL, and the required terminal reference.
  3. Install 120 Ω termination only at the two physical ends and set one bitrate across the network.
  4. Begin with test frames and inspect acknowledgements and error counters.
  5. Implement bus-off recovery, filters, authorization, and safe command handling.

CAN Unit Deployment Notes

  • This unit is for classical high-speed CAN and should not be assumed to support CAN FD data-phase speeds.
  • Isolation does not replace correct cable, topology, shielding, surge protection, or enclosure design.
  • Maximum distance depends on bitrate, cable, stubs, termination, and loading.
  • Do not transmit on an unknown vehicle or machine network.
  • CAN communication alone is not a certified functional-safety layer.
