The M5Stack DMX Unit provides a compact interface for DMX512 lighting-control networks. It integrates a CA-IS3092W isolated half-duplex RS485 transceiver, an XLR-3 female connector, Grove serial connection, and a switchable 120Ω termination resistor.
Electrical isolation is specified up to 5kVrms, helping separate the controller side from the RS485 bus in supported conditions. The transceiver supports data rates up to 500Kbps, while DMX512 uses a fixed 250Kbps rate.
Use the unit for stage lighting, landscape lighting, decorative fixtures, dimmer control, and DMX512 testing. The Grove interface connects to the host serial port while the XLR-3 connector links to compatible DMX equipment.
The onboard termination resistor can be enabled where the unit is installed at the end of the RS485 bus. Incorrect termination can contribute to reflections and unreliable communication, so plan bus topology, cable impedance, grounding, and termination across the full installation.
Isolation improves interface robustness but does not eliminate the need for correct wiring, surge protection, grounding strategy, connector pinout verification, and enclosure design. Confirm the DMX fixture pinout before connection because physical connectors alone do not guarantee identical wiring.
Keep the bus topology appropriate for RS485, avoid uncontrolled stubs, use suitable twisted-pair cable, and verify termination at the actual endpoints. For permanent installations, follow the applicable electrical and venue requirements.
Technical setup details are available in the M5Stack DMX Unit documentation.
