The M5Stack OP90 Unit provides non-contact object-passage detection with an infrared transmitter and receiver arranged across the sensing gap. When an object blocks the infrared path, the output changes state so a host can detect passage, position, or a mechanical limit condition.
The 90° mechanical layout is useful where the sensor needs to fit beside a moving part, slot, counter path, or compact mechanism. Typical projects include object counting, machine-position detection, automatic-door prototypes, and embedded motion interfaces.
Because sensing is optical, there is no mechanical switch contact to wear during normal detection. Reliability still depends on object size, alignment, contamination, ambient infrared light, mounting stability, and the geometry of the moving target.
Keep the optical path clean and verify that the target fully interrupts the beam under the real mechanical tolerances. Test the system across vibration, temperature, speed, and lighting conditions expected in the installation.
A general-purpose infrared sensor can support position detection and interlocks in prototypes, but it should not be the sole protective device for machinery where a missed detection could cause injury. Use appropriately rated safety sensors and controls for safety-critical functions.
