Connect Remote Sensors Where New Cable and Wi-Fi Are Impractical

A pump, tank, gate, field sensor, or equipment cabinet may sit far beyond the nearest network connection. Trenching new signal cable costs more than the sensor, while Wi-Fi coverage can disappear behind buildings, trees, or industrial structures. The M5Stack LoRa E220 920MHz Unit provides a UART-controlled, low-data-rate radio link for Japanese 920MHz deployments that need status, alarms, commands, or periodic readings over a larger area.

The E220-900T22S module uses an LLCC68 radio and supports point-to-point and broadcast communication. Onboard DIP switches select four operating modes, allowing the same hardware to support normal transmission, configuration, wireless wake-up, and other documented workflows.

Build a Direct Link Without Installing a Gateway

Two controllers can exchange data directly for a remote pump alarm, agricultural sensor, gate status, machine fault signal, or site-wide notification. Broadcast mode can send the same status to multiple listening nodes. This is useful when the application needs a simple UART radio link rather than a complete IP or LoRaWAN network.

Keep payloads compact and design clear acknowledgements, sequence numbers, retries, and timeout behavior when delivery matters. A long-range radio link can reduce infrastructure, but it does not guarantee that every packet reaches the destination.

Confirm the Frequency Region Before Ordering

This version operates from 920.6 to 928.0MHz and is designed for the Japanese 920MHz band. The radio module lists TELEC certification number 001-P01730. It is not interchangeable with 433MHz, EU868, US915, or another regional LoRa version.

Confirm the deployment country's regulations, allowed channels, transmit-power limits, duty-cycle or access rules, antenna requirements, and any final-product compliance obligations. Every radio in the link must use compatible regional hardware and matching configuration.

Match Every Setting on Both Ends of the Link

Many failed links are configuration problems rather than range problems. Check frequency channel, air data rate, addressing, point-to-point or broadcast mode, UART baud rate, parity, wake behavior, and communication-key settings on every node. Record the working configuration so a replacement device can be commissioned without guessing.

Plan Range Around the Site, Not the Maximum Number

The product documentation lists communication distance up to approximately 5km under stated test conditions. Buildings, hills, metal structures, vegetation, interference, low antenna height, enclosure shielding, and faster air data rates can reduce that distance substantially.

Test the radio at the actual endpoints and at the worst seasonal or operating conditions. Mount the antenna away from metal and large cables, keep it vertical when the link design expects vertical polarization, and raise it above nearby obstructions where practical.

Use the Included Antenna Correctly

The package includes a 2.5dBi, 110mm SMA male antenna. Attach the correct antenna before transmitting. Do not place it inside a closed metal box or directly against a ground plane that changes its tuning and blocks the signal.

Choose It for Small, Important Messages

This radio fits sensor readings, equipment states, threshold alarms, simple remote commands, and periodic telemetry. It is not intended for video, large files, or applications that require continuous high-throughput communication.

Mode settings and command references are available in the M5Stack LoRaE220-920 documentation.
