M5Stack LoRaWAN EU868 Unit for Long-Range IoT Nodes

M5Stack LoRaWAN EU868 Unit adds long-range, low-power wireless communication to embedded sensors and controllers using the STM32WLE5 platform. This version is designed for the EU868 863–870MHz band and supports LoRaWAN 1.0.3, Class A, Class B, and Class C operation, OTAA and ABP activation, plus direct LoRa P2P communication.

EU868 deployment note: This product is the EU868 model for 863–870MHz operation. Confirm that the gateway and network server are configured for EU868 before testing. The preserved overview video is a general LoRaWAN product video hosted under an M5Stack US915 resource path; use the EU868 documentation below for frequency-specific setup.

Connect Through UART and AT Commands

The module communicates with a host through UART at a default 115200 baud rate and is configured with AT commands. This lets the main controller keep responsibility for sensor acquisition and application logic while the radio unit handles joining and wireless communication. The included 20cm HY2.0-4P Grove cable supports fast connection to compatible M5Stack hosts.

Use a LoRaWAN Network or Direct P2P Link

Choose LoRaWAN mode when remote nodes need to report through a compatible EU868 gateway and network server. Choose P2P mode when two devices need a direct local radio link without a LoRaWAN gateway. This makes the m5stack lora hardware useful for both managed IoT networks and point-to-point experiments, but the network architecture should be decided before firmware integration.

Match Class A, B, or C to the Power Budget

Class A fits battery-oriented nodes that transmit periodically and open limited receive windows. Class B adds scheduled receive opportunities. Class C keeps receive windows available more continuously for responsive downlinks with higher power use. Select the class according to reporting interval, downlink latency, battery size, and the behavior of the complete device.

Plan Range and Power with Real Test Conditions

Official P2P test figures list up to 2300m at 125Kbps and 1300m at 500Kbps under stated conditions. Actual distance depends on antenna placement, terrain, building materials, interference, data rate, transmit settings, and regulatory constraints. The included 50Ω rubber duck antenna is specified at 2.8dBi with a 195mm total length and SMA male connector.

Specified current figures include approximately 7.23mA at 5V in idle and 28.61µA at 5V in sleep. Battery calculations must also include the host, sensors, regulator loss, wake interval, join attempts, retries, transmit duty cycle, and local signal quality.
