The M5Stack RS485-ISO Unit connects a TTL UART host to industrial RS485 meters, sensors, controllers, and Modbus RTU devices while adding galvanic isolation between the controller and field bus. Its CA-IS3082W transceiver supports half-duplex communication up to 500 kbps, and the isolated power stage helps reduce problems caused by ground-potential differences and electrical noise. Correct deployment still requires verified A/B polarity, topology, termination, biasing, shielding, protection, and protocol settings.

How to Integrate the RS485-ISO Unit

  1. Power off the system and verify terminal pinout, supply, and A/B labeling.
  2. Connect the Grove UART side to the host and the terminal to the field cable.
  3. Configure matching baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits, address, and protocol.
  4. Install termination only at the two physical ends and apply biasing as required.
  5. Test one slave first, validate checksums, and expand the bus while monitoring errors.

  • Isolation does not replace correct grounding, shielding, surge protection, or enclosure design.
  • RS485 defines the electrical layer; the host must implement the application protocol.
  • Maximum node count depends on loading, topology, biasing, termination, and cable quality.

  • Do not service field wiring while unknown or hazardous equipment is energized.
