The M5Stack Ultrasonic Distance Sensor I/O Unit adds contactless distance measurement to robots, level monitors, parking indicators, and interactive installations. Its RCWL-9620 controller, 16 mm ultrasonic transducer, GPIO trigger/echo interface, and internal temperature compensation support measurements from 2 to 450 cm while keeping host integration straightforward. It suits developers who need a compact ranging module and prefer direct pulse-width measurement instead of an I2C abstraction.

Setup and Integration

  1. Connect the Grove cable to host pins that support one output for TRIG and one input for ECHO.
  2. Send a short trigger pulse, measure the returned echo-pulse width, and convert the elapsed time into distance.
  3. Start with one sensor and a flat, hard target positioned perpendicular to the transducer.
  4. Add timeout handling, median filtering, and minimum-change rules before using the value in motion or control logic.

Example Workflow

  1. Trigger a measurement no faster than the 50 ms cycle.
  2. Reject missing echoes and readings outside the 2–450 cm operating range.
  3. Filter several valid samples to reduce reflections and short spikes.
  4. Apply the result to a distance alarm, robot speed limit, or level calculation.

Deployment Notes

  • Soft, narrow, angled, curved, moving, or sound-absorbing targets can reduce usable range.
  • Multiple ultrasonic sensors can interfere with each other; trigger them sequentially and allow echoes to decay.
  • Keep the transducer face unobstructed and provide clearance from enclosure edges.
  • The module has no stated waterproof rating and should be protected from condensation, rain, and splashes.
  • At long distance, use a practical timeout instead of blocking the host while waiting for an echo.
